Architecture: The DuFour Center is a simple late-20thcentury modern building made up of linked box-like structures providing and expressing visually their special uses such as gymnasium, pool, etc. It is the second gymnasium purpose-built for The Catholic University of America.
History: The athletic facility was built in 1985.
Significance: The DuFour Center is separated from the main campus by Taylor Road, N.E., and a wooded area. It does not contribute to the architectural or historical character of the campus.
Condition: As a recreational facility in use year round and close to 18 hours per day, interior playing and circulation surfaces have had to be replaced since construction. Fitness facilities are limited. Regular cosmetic upgrades will continue to be a requirement. The completion of the upper fields and the grading, hydration, planning and turf reconstruction program on the lower fields had to be accomplished in phases after the building construction. The outdoor fields and track require periodic capital investment. Site plantings were provided through the generosity of Edward J. Pryzbyla, alumnus and benefactor.
