Flather Hall

Name: Flather Hall. Named for donor Mary Flather.

Date: 1962; renovated 1997

Architect: Gaudreau & Gaudreau

Elevation: 171.66'

Use: The hall houses approximately180 students in traditional double occupancy rooms located on common corridors. Bath and shower facilities are shared use.

Style: Mid-20th-century modern.

Composition: Rectilinear with an elevator tower.

Size: Five stories.

Gross square footage—40,410.

Netsquare footage—34,628.

Materials: Red brick

Trim: Metal and concrete

Roof: Flat, gable roof on tower.

Windows: Double-hung and fixed glass panels w/aluminum frames, some glass block on the elevator tower.

Door: Double-glass doors with sidelights at grade.

Note: Typical academic dormitory structure near other buildings originally constructed for women’s housing. It is now co-ed housing.

Setting: Foundation planting and lawn on a hilly site.

Architecture: Simple mid-20th-century modern, academic, residential building with minimal ornament save for a distinguishing elevator tower at the main entrance.

History: Flather Hall was built in 1962 and renovated in 1997 as a purpose-built residential facility. It originally housed women only.

Significance: Flather Hall is a free-standing structure, not related to a complex or composition; it has a neutral impact on the campus.

Condition: The renovation in 1997 included the addition of an elevator, air conditioning, upgraded common areas, a computer laboratory, and other accessibility improvements. All rooms have network connections to the computer system and cable television services. The roof was replaced in August 2001.
