Architecture: Keane Hall has a simple geometric style with little ornament and is a twin to axially related Shahan Hall. The first story has vertical punched windows and the second and third stories have triple grouped windows separated with a metal spandrel panels. The limestone was selected to match Mullen Library and Shahan Hall.
History: Keane Hall is a purpose-built academic structure designed to match the earlier Shahan Hall and blend with the Mullen Library in a formal composition. The building was vacated as a physics facility with the opening of Hannan Hall in 1987.
Significance: Keane Hall is contributing as a part of a formal three-building composition with Mullen Library and Shahan Hall on axis with the National Shrine. As part of this grouping, it contributes significantly to the architectural presentation of the university campus in itsrole as a national Catholic educational and cultural icon in the capital city.
Condition: The strategic and master plans identify this prominent structure for renovation to accommodate a state-of-the-art classroom facility. A building program and architectural study are being developed to support fund-raising opportunities for a renovation project.
