History: Built in 1971 as a residence hall this building still serves its original function.
Significance: Spellman Hall has a neutral impact on its site, and is unrelated to the main campus across Michigan Avenue, N.E. It is not a contributing structure architecturally or historically.
Condition: All rooms have network connections to the computer system and cable television services. The mechanical and electrical systems, elevator and window hardware are in need of immediate replacement. A new chiller was installed in 1997 to serve this facility and Conaty Hall. As a facility located across Michigan Avenue, its long-term retention as a residence is projected to be limited. The building shares a site with other facilities identified as having the potential for cooperative ventures and mixed use development.
